Floods in New Zealand: Thousands of Citizens Displaced

It has been reported that 400 houses have been evacuated due to flooding following heavy rains in New Zealand.

400 homes were evacuated after flooding following heavy rains in New Zealand's West Coast and Nelson-Tasman regions.

More than 400 homes in Nelson were evacuated after the Maitai River, which runs through the city, destroyed the levees, the National Emergency Management Agency said. While the highway to Nelson was closed to traffic due to flooding, Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese said it will take years to repair damaged infrastructure services.

After Nelson, Tasman and the West Coast, a state of emergency was also declared in the Malborough area.

More than a thousand homes were left without electricity, more than 240 households were evacuated and education was interrupted due to the flood disaster in New Zealand in June last year.
